Resilience is a key component of success in sport, life, and other areas. The ability to rise above and overcome adversity allows people to be stronger, wiser, and more confident. Fortunately, most elite athletes possess the natural ability to develop resilience through the use of multiple personal (searching for meaning, positive outlook and reflection) and situational (social support, access to sport, physical and informational resources) coping strategies.
However, many younger athletes do not know how to apply these skills and struggle when adversity strikes. This is where coaching, mentorship and other supportive mechanisms can help.

The most important thing to remember during adversity is to focus on what you can control. Putting energy into factors that you cannot control will drain and deplete your resources. Be sure to define what you can control early on and pour all of your resources into those areas. For example, if bad officiating is distracting you, try to refocus your attention on the things you can control, such as your effort and consistency. It’s also helpful to practice mindfulness and meditation practices, which can help to reduce stress and increase mental calmness.
