A CO2 blood test is often part of an electrolyte panel that helps healthcare providers see if your body is balancing its acids and bases properly (pH balance). Your blood carries carbon dioxide from your cells to your lungs, where you exhale it. Too little or too much carbon dioxide can indicate an imbalance in your electrolytes, which can be a sign of more serious health problems.

Some types of CO2 monitoring devices use photoacoustic spectroscopy. These sensors expose a sample to pulses of electromagnetic energy that are tuned to the absorption wavelength of CO2. The molecules within the sample react with this energy and generate pressure waves that can be detected by a sensor. The data is then converted into a usable CO2 reading. Other detectors rely on non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) technology. This sensor detects the presence of a gas based on its unique molecular structure, which is different from other gases and water vapor.
